Workshop Details

by Nedim Catal

Every workshop consists of two basic parts:

  1. Open step pattern exercises with emphasis on style and syncopation according to the level. The purpose of that is to prepare student for certain level of partnering and enable them to enjoy the dance from the very beginning.
  2. Second part of the class will focus on partnering and figures according to the level of class. We will apply techniques learned from the first part of the class and compose them with new steps. Emphasis on lead and follow as well as body language and quality of communication between partners.

I need to mention that I don't teach long patterns. Dance vocabulary consists of relatively short figures very easily put into more complex units and applicable in any combination. Those give dancers options to chose their way of responding to various types of Salsa.

Because styling is a thing that can not be learned overnight, but needs to be experienced and involves understanding and feeling for this kind of music, I have advanced dancers who come to my beginner classes and benefit from them.

I divided my classes into four levels:

  1. Beginner: timing, posture, balance, walk, basic step, basic lead, simple turns and combinations.
  2. Intermediate Beginner: shines, new posture, varieties in balance, respond to the music, styling and more complicated turns and combinations.
  3. Advanced Beginner: syncopation, free-style, multiple turns, analysis of dance and styling corrections, timing (mambo and salsa).
  4. Beginner Casino La Rueda (dancing wheel): group dance with partner-exchange, very dynamic dance where you experience a new dimension of Salsa. It is recommended for advanced beginners and higher.

There is no point of reference to the levels of my courses. I adjust them to the level of an average student in the class. They are called beginner level courses not because techniques learned are beginner ones but because students need to gain some experience to be Latin dancers. Steps only are not enough. Top
