No SSDS dance this Thursday (5/20), come to Calmix dance on Saturday (5/22)

Date: Sat, 15 May 2004 14:48:59 -0000 Hi everyone, First the bad news: we don't have the Ballybay this Thursday (5/20) due to an Irish dance event the owner is hosting. Thursday dances resume next week on the 27th. The good news is, you can enjoy our regular Calmix DJ dance on Saturday (5/22) at Ballybay. The swing dance goes from 9pm to midnight. The music is mostly west coast oriented (with blues, R&B, funk, contemporary, etc.) We also play some lindy, hustle, latin, and country. As always, bring your favorite CDs, we do take requests. Country dance fans can show up at 8pm for the bonus country hour, DJ'ed by Chris Egan. If you've never been to SSDS Calmix Dances, you don't know what you are missing. Some of the best swing dancers in central New York show up regularly and everyone has a great time. The cost is only $5. Please pass this message to your e-challenged friends. Thank you. Can Isik.

Date: Wed, 5 May 2004 22:15:44 -0400 Over 190 people came to this year's SSDS Mario Robau Jr. West Coast Swing Weekend and had a great time! Mario shared his wisdom and experience with us for a third year in a row and the people keep coming back year after year for more (I've been taking classes from him for 10 years!). I can't tell you how many emails I've received about what a great weekend this is and how SSDS does a great job of putting on an event! There's a lot of hard work behind the scenes and at the event itself. I'd like to thank the people who worked this weekend - Registration: Rosalie, Eileen, Marilynn, Laya, Khwan, Joe, Rob, Mike, Michael, Leigh, Jason, Annie, Ann, Chris, John, Tina & Kim DJ's: Antoinette, Steve, Lon, Can, Tania & Mario (who filled in at the end of the night) Snacks & delicious cookies: Mary Ellen, Connie & Kim - all baked & donated by these wonderful ladies Judges: Cindy, Julie, Antoinette, & of course - our head judge - Mario "Pin Ladies": Alysia, Connie & Mary Ellen Master of Ceremonies: Kim Colasanti (McLaughlin) Weekend Captains: Mary Ellen, Dave & Alice SSDS Board: Tania, Greg, Deborah & Mary Ellen (and former Board member - Can) We had an open Jack and Jill contest with 42 people participating! The winners of our Jack and Jill contest are: 1st Place - Tim Craft (Rochester, NY USA) and Veronica Stewart (Port Colborne, ON Canada) 2nd Place - Chris Akil (Branchburg, NJ USA) and Shelley Saxena (Toronto, ON Canada) 3rd Place - Dave Hutcheson (Barrie, ON Canada) and Annmarie Rainford (Portland, OR USA) Thanks to everyone that came to the weekend and we look forward to an even bigger weekend next year!! "MYDOOM" Worm

Date: Tue, 27 Jan 2004 02:41:20 -0800 This is an extremely severe case of virus, spreading faster than anything else, first sighted yesterday afternoon, and is already spread everywhere on earth by now. Here are some links for it: http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=mydoom&cid=8954&affid=163-01 http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,114460,00.asp http://www.techtv.com/news/securityalert/story/0,24195,3602245,00.html And the link that keeps giving: http://news.google.com/news?q=mydoom According to Tech TV, the subject header appears as "Test", "test" or "status". McAfee says the "from" is random, "subject" is random, and the body of the message changes as well. Acoording to a CBS reporter, the email message body says: This is a test of Unicode characters. and if you don't open the (often a zip file) attachment on a Windows platform, you'll be fine. Web based email (those not downloaded to Outlook etc but viewed online) should be fine. All that said, better be safe than sorry: Don't open email you don't expect (like this email), from someone you don't know (like... me... yeah, what are you doing reading this email anyway?). .Kanat Bolazar.

SSDS lists and virus attachments

Date: Wed, 16 Jul 2003 22:37:04 -0000 Hi everyone, We all found out that the current version of the listserv software does not scan postings for viruses. So, I changed the settings of the lists SSDS and SSDS-ANN. Postings with attachments other than text files (such as forwarded email, or html formatted email) will be returned to their senders with a short message. This will stop any executable virus laden email. Since usually we don't send to the list pictures, etc, I'm sure it will not restrict our regular postings. Thank you. Can Isik

UNESCO International Dance Day - 29th April 2003

Subject: UNESCO International Dance Day - 29th April 2003 Date: Sat, 12 Apr 2003 09:25:51 +0200 From: Lucio PERES In 1982 the International Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute, UNESCO, created International Dance Day to be celebrated every year on the 29th April. The date commemorates the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727 - 1810), the creator of modern ballet. Every year a message from a well-known dance personality is circulated throughout the world. The intention of International Dance Day and the Message is to bring all Dance together on this occasion, to celebrate this art form and revel in its universality, to cross all political, cultural and ethnic barriers and bring people together in peace and friendship with a common language - DANCE. The International Dance Committee of ITI is collaborating with World Dance Alliance for the celebration of International Dance Day. _____________________________________________________ Year 2003 - International Dance Day International Message By
Mats EK What is dance? If you answer that, you are not trustworthy. But let me try, anyway: dance is thinking with your body. Is it necessary to think with your body? Not for survival, perhaps, but for living. There are so many thoughts that only the body can think. Other things, like peace, might be more important than dance. But then we will need dance to celebrate peace. And to exorcise the demons of war, like Nijinsky did. Emma Goldman, the anarchist, maybe said it best: a revolution that does not allow me to dance, is not worth fighting for. The god Shiva created the universe with his dance. But dance is the opposite of all divine pretentions. Dance is an everlasting attempt, like writing in water. Dance is not life, but it keeps alive all the little things that the big thing is made of.

New list SSDS-ANN open for business :)

Thu, 3 Apr 2003 22:03:01 -0000 From: "Can Isik" Subject: New list SSDS-ANN open for business :) Hi everyone, for a long time we have been trying to keep the subscribers of SSDS@listser.syr.edu informed of swing dance news, within a reasonable email traffic volume. In the process we managed to irritate several regular posters with our guidelines, and lost a few subscribers with the traffic volume that was too much for them. We established a new email list for SSDS, just for those folks who don't want more than one or two messages per week. Subscribers of this list will receive my weekly email schedules, and not much more (nobody else can post messages there). So, if for some reason you would like to limit your email traffic from us to an absolute minimum, subscribe to SSDS-ANN, and unsubscribe from SSDS, using the following procedure. Also, if you know of any dance friends who quit our list, please inform them of this new service. I will put this info on the web sometime during the weekend. Please note that there is no reason why you should subscribe to both lists. The regular SSDS list includes the minimal info on SSDS-ANN. To subscribe to the new announce only list, send the following command after you replace the generic blurb with your name in the body of an email message to listserv@listserv.syr.edu. SUB ssds-ann Your Name Here Example: SUB ssds-ann Jane Q. Terpsichorean If you would like to unsubscribe from the original SSDS list, send the following command to listserv@listserv.syr.edu in the body of an email message. You need to use the email account which you want to unsubscribe. UNSUB ssds Your request will be processed automatically, so do not include any other info in the email, such as your signature, otherwise it may be misinterpreted as a command. You will receive by email a simple confirmation request. After you confirm, your request will be implemented and you will get an acknowledgement message. Peace, Can Isik

SSDS Hops $1 for Dance Students

Date: Mon, 3 Feb 2003 17:13:19 -0000 From: "Can Isik" Subject: SSDS Tax Cut for Dance Students Hi everyone, It's very simple: anyone who takes a dance lesson in or around Syracuse gets in that week's SSDS Thursday dance for just $1! You don't need any coupon or letter from your instructor. All you need to do is sign in your name and your instructors name at the door. Everyone who has been attending our dances know that they have been very popular, and a lot of fun. That's why we think we can afford this "tax cut" to support those who are investing in their dancing. In three months, we will review this initiative, and make it our regular practice if its outcome is positive. If you have any questions, feel free to reply to this email, or talk to me, Tania or Greg on Thursday. Peace, Can Isik (Pronounced "Jon Ishik")

Summer Hummer 2002 News

Date: Wed, 28 Aug 2002 11:54:15 -0400 From: "Kim McLaughlin" Subject: SSDS news flash To: SSDS@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU Hi everyone, I just wanted to pass on a report of Summer Hummer this year. Unfortunately, it appeared that SSDS and CNY did not have as many attendees as in the past. Those that were there, however, made sure they were noticed. The weekend went on without a hitch as usual. Bill keeps his events on a tight schedule, which is great (although sometimes things get changed around, which is annoying.) Many of you were able to catch the demo that Maria and Eric gave a couple weeks ago at the SSDS Thursday dance. Those of you who didn't, missed out on a real treat. Eric and Maria took their routine and competed in the Rising Star Classic competition at Summer Hummer and placed second! Their routine was definitely the best as far as choreography and execution and they brought the crowd to a standing ovation! So congratulations to Maria and Eric! Perhaps we can persuade them to perform their prize-winning routine again. :o) Most of you know Otis as Syracuse's own "Hustle King," but he has been secretly practicing his west coast swing. He competed for the first time in the Newcomer jack and jill for WCS and walked away with second place. Connie Edgerton also competed for the first time in newcomer WCS jack and jill and did a great job. We were all very proud of her! Jack and jills are very difficult competitions because not only do you not know what music is coming, but you may have never danced with the partner you're with. In this particular competition, there were about 40 couples, only about 15 of which made finals. Congratulations to Connie. Steve and Kim both made alternate finalists in the Intermediate WCS jack and jill. All in all, it was a fun weekend. Workshops every morning, competition and parties every afternoon and evening. Steve and Alysia win the prize for staying up the latest. They were on the dance floor until 5:30am Sunday morning. I was a close second--I left at 4:30 am because I had to get up at 9am to take a private lesson. Everyone should go to a weekend like this at least once. SSDS Reporter-at-large, Kim
