SSDS dance & Steve's lessons canceled this week (10/8) only

Sent: Wed, October 7, 2009 12:39:09 PM

Hello Dancers,

The St. Clare Theater has some work in progress going on right now and the
floors will be looking beautiful with new finish ready to dance on October
15th. They are still working on it today and it needs three days to dry
and cure so there will be no SSDS dance there tomorrow night.

Please join us and come dancing at St. Clare Theater on October 15th and
accept our apologies about October 8th dance cancellation.

The Breast Cancer research fundraiser jar will still be available October
15th to accept your donations.

Thank you for your support. We love our Volunteers,

Mary Ellen

Anne Fleming Benefit Dance

From: Maria Cirino (mariacirino@HOTMAIL.COM)
Sent: Sunday, July 26, 2009 5:53:44 PM

Occasionally sickness and tragedy strikes our small dance community.
Usually when this happens, dancers come together to support each other.

Anne Fleming has been a big part of the New England dance community for
just about as long as I've been dancing. I first met her at Mario Robau
workshops in Connecticut, back about 13 years ago. Even back then, she
was a favorite instructor of the dancers in Boston.

The Boston dance community is having a dance on Saturday, August 1st as
a fundraiser for Anne to raise money for her (as she won't be able to
teach) while she battles cancer. Below is information about Anne and
about the benefit. While you might not be able to attend, I wonder if
they can do some sort of online auction for all the private lessons and
dance event passes that are being donated to help raise money. I will
keep you all informed if that transpires.

Please keep Anne in your thoughts & prayers.

Kris Caspari - 1st place Newcomer WCS Jack & Jill
Keith Chow - 2nd place Newcomer WCS Jack & Jill
Alysia Bonvino made finals in a really tough Advanced WCS Jack & Jill
Northern Lights - 3rd place Team division

At Boston Dance Challenge this past weekend, we had the following results:
Maria Cirino - 1st place Advanced/All-Star WCS Jack & Jill (my first time dancing spotlight)
Keith Chow - 5th place Novice WCS Jack & Jill (his first time in Novice)

There's a couple of us going up to the Toronto Open Swing Dance Championships this weekend.
I'll be head judging for them this year.

Wish our Syracuse-area competitors luck!!

West Coast Dance Film Swings Into Rochester

Red Carpet Event – Friday 6/19

Amy Smart, Tom Malloy, Billy Zane, and Betty White topline Robert Iscove’s “LOVE N’ DANCING”

June 15th, 2009 – Screen Media Films announced today that their upcoming new West Coast Swing dance film, Love N’ Dancing will be opening with a red carpet event in Rochester, NY Friday June 19th. The film stars Amy Smart (Crank 1 & 2, Road Trip) and Tom Malloy (writer and star of The Alphabet Killer).

Directed by Robert Iscove (She’s All That), this film includes stars Billy Zane, Nicola Royston, Caroline Rhea, Rachel Dratch, and Betty White. Also in the cast are award-winning Swing Dance Champions, including So You Think You Can Dance champion Benji Schwimmer. The film was produced and choreographed by 4-Time US Open Swing dance champion Robert Royston.

When Jessica, a bored-with-life English teacher (Smart) meets Jake, a West Coast Swing dancer (Malloy), they have an instant connection. Both feel that the other can fulfill what is missing in their lives. But Jessica’s got a workaholic fiancée (Zane) who’s not a bad guy when he’s not on his blackberry, and Jake’s got his former dance partner (Royston) who just won’t let him away from the dangling carrot of a rekindled relationship. Jake and Jessica must try to elude all obstacles, romantic or otherwise, to stay focused on the goal - winning the World Title, and each other.

“Love N’ Dancing” features West Coast Swing dancing, the origins of which can be traced to the Swing Era, even though the style looks nothing like the traditionally recognizable Swing dance. Instead it is a smooth, slinky dance that can be done to soul, funk, country, rock and roll, pop, and hip-hop. It’s a visually spectacular dance style.

Malloy, married to a Rochester native, was instrumental in bringing the film The Alphabet Killer to Rochester back in 2007 after learned of the cold case double initial murders from his wife. Love N Dancing, Tom’s latest work, was inspired when Tom met a hearing impaired man that learned to dance and compete by feeling vibrations from music.

Tom will be in attendance for the Friday night 7:10pm showing at the Pittsford Plaza Cinema 9. (3349 Monroe Ave. Rochester NY). Red carpet at 7:00pm, Q&A immediately following the screening. See it in Rochester from the 19th to the 25th of June.

FOR INTERVIEWS with TOM MALLOY prior to event on 6/19 please contact: Joanna Palvino (585) 507-6868 jpalvino@rochester.rr.com

Still Need Volunteers for Mike Topel Weekend

From: Kris Caspari (casp2099@YAHOO.COM)
Sent: Monday, February 9, 2009 5:23:34 PM

I still have some openings for door/setup/cleanup volunteers for the Saturday Dance (February 14th 2009) for Topel Weekend so if you were waffling on whether or not to commit to volunteering, now is the perfect time! Not only do you get all the benefits of volunteering with the SSDS, but you also get to save the $10 that you would have to pay to get in the door! If you are interested in a shift, please either email me or catch me at the Thursday Swing Dance. If I still have openings on Friday night, you can try to catch me at the Dance Lovers Dance at the KofC as well.

Connie is also looking for people to help make some scrumptious sweets for our Saturday night dance! So if you are in a baking, creating, or buying mood, let her know. We would love to try your creations (or Wegmans for that matter!).

Thanks!

Kris Caspari

Syracuse Represents in Houston!!

From: Maria Cirino (mariacirino@HOTMAIL.COM)
Sent: Thursday, January 22, 2009 11:49:25 AM

We should first thank all of the people who came out to support the Northen Lights Dance Team as we performed last Thursday at the SSDS dance!! Without your encouragement, we wouldn't have done an awesome exhibition Saturday Night to open the awards ceremony at Americas' Classic Championships in Houston, TX!

Unfortunately there weren't enough teams there to have the competition, but we represented Syracuse very well down in the deep south! Everyone was impressed that all the girls know how to lead & follow. The other team that came ready to compete was from Dallas, TX and had 16 couples on the floor (that's 32 people). Wow did that floor look full! And they did a really nice job with their exhibition too!

Felix and I competed in Rising Star Routine division and took 3rd place in a pretty tough division. If you're on Facebook you can see a couple pics of us while competing and the gorgeous job that Rachel, Jessica, Meisha & Connie did on my hair and makeup!! Only beautiful women like them can turn me into the diva that I was that night!

Felix, Rachel and Alysia all made finals in their WCS Jack & Jill divisions. The floor was crowded with really good competitors from the US, Canada, England and other places around the globe, which made late night dancing a total blast!!

The trip home was a whole different story . . . we'll save that for when we see you on the dance floor

1st Mike Rosa & Jessica Reeher
4th Steve Broskey & Rachel Cucinotta

BTP Competition Results!

From: "Maria Cirino" mariacirino@hotmail.com Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2007 12:33:24 -0400 Congratulations to Paul Nuzzo and Adam Earle from Syracuse! Paul placed 1st with Tammy Greene in the Intermediate WCS Jack & Jill competition at Boston Tea Party this weekend. Adam Earle made it past two cuts to dance in the finals of the Newcomer WCS Jack & Jill competition at Boston Tea Party too. The level at which people compete depends on your experience in competition dancing and your accumulation of points awarded for making finals and successfully placing in the competition. Other dancers from the greater Syracuse area that made finals are Neil Newbauer from Rochester in Novice WCS J&J, Shelby Vandenberg who danced in Syracuse while attending SU in Novice WCS J&J, Dom Coppa from Albany in Novice WCS J&J, and Michael Diener from NYC/Rochester placing 2nd in Intermediate WCS J&J. This weekend was a blast - over 1400 dancers from all over the globe dancing either West Coast Swing (WCS), Lindy or Balboa. Maria
