There are two email lists for Syracuse Swing Dance Society. The first one (SSDS) allows subscribers to post messages as well as receive them. Dance instructors and event organizers regularly post messages. The traffic volume is about 5-10 messages per week. The second one (SSDS-ANN) is for those who only want a weekly schedule of events emailed to them, and not much else. Here is how you subscribe to those lists.
- Click on the command. Most browsers will bring out a mail window with the command already typed-in. (If this doesn't happen for you, please initiate an email to listserv@listserv.syr.edu, and complete the instructions for the appropriate list manually.)
- Replace the generic phrase 'Put Your Name Here' with your name when subscribing.
- Send the email.
- Confirm your command by following the instructions in the email you will get from the server. This step is for user authentication.
Please note that:
- We have list user guidelines. Please review and subscribe only if you agree with them.
- File attachments are not allowed in postings to either list. Please refer to the relevant news bulletin for more info.
- If you stopped receiving email from the list, maybe you were booted due to something similar to the following. Feel free to subscribe again, after you fix that problem. Thanks.
- Your mailbox was full for a while, and the webslave kept getting error messages
- Your anti spam program is not very smart, and thinks ssds mail is spam
- Your anti spam program wants the sender (that's ssds) register someplace that it is a legitimate sender (aint gonna happen), etc.

To subscribe to the SSDS email list, send the following command after you replace the generic blurb with your name in the body of an email message to listserv@listserv.syr.edu.
Example:
SUB SSDS Jane Q. Terpsichorean
Your request will be processed automatically, so do not include any other info in the email, such as your signature, otherwise it may be misinterpreted as a command. You will receive by email a simple confirmation request. After you confirm, you will get our welcome message.
After you subscribe, you will start receiving all the messages sent to the list by other subscribers.
To send an email to everyone on the ssds list, use your normal email program to send to ssds@listserv.syr.edu. Please note that you will not receive a copy of your own email. Unless you get an error message, assume that everyone on the list got your email. You can change this default setting as described below.

We established SSDS-ANN just for those folks who don't want more than one or two messages per week. Subscribers of this list will receive weekly SSDS email schedules, and not much more (subscribers can't post messages there). Subscribers of the regular list SSDS also receive those messages; so there is no need to belong to both lists.
To subscribe to the SSDS-ANN email list, send the following command after you replace the generic blurb with your name in the body of an email message to listserv@listserv.syr.edu.
Example:
SUB SSDS-ANN Jane Q. Terpsichorean
Your request will be processed automatically, so do not include any other info in the email, such as your signature, otherwise it may be misinterpreted as a command. You will receive by email a simple confirmation request. After you confirm, you will get our welcome message.

The following instructions are customized for the subscribers of the main list, SSDS. If you are a subscriber of the announce-only list SSDS-ANN, you can still use them, after you replace the default list name SSDS with your list name SSDS-ANN in the commands that you send to the listserv computer. Thanks.
How to stop getting email from the list
If you would like to unsubscribe, send the following command to listserv@listserv.syr.edu in the body of an email message. You need to use the email account which you want to unsubscribe.
If you would like to temporarily stop receiving email but remain subscribed, send the following command to listserv@listserv.syr.edu in the body of an email message. This is a useful command when you are going on a vacation, etc.
You can resume mail by using the following command.
How to change email address
If you would like to change the email address at which you send/receive email to/from the list, send the following command to listserv@listserv.syr.edu in the body of an email message. You need to use the original email account which is already on the list (the one you want to unsubscribe). Replace the word "newaddress" with your new email address.
If your old address in not accessible to you, contact the WebSlave.
How to get acknowledgement of email sent to the list
Normally, you don't get a copy or an acknowledgement of the email you sent to the list, not unlike a regular email message. You can change this by sending to listserv@listserv.syr.edu one of the following commands:
- SET ssds REPRO
- Use if you want to receive from the list a copy of your own messages.
- SET ssds ACK NOREPRO
- Use to receive a short acknowledgement instead.
- SET ssds NOACK NOREPRO
- Use to turn off acknowledgements completely (default).
Multiple Copies of Messages
Those of you who are on the ISDN-L list list, please beware that when you subscribe to SSDS list you will get more than one copy of messages that are posted to multiple lists. We don't know of an easy way to get rid of this redundancy. We hope it is no more than a minor nuisance for you :-)
Detailed listserv manuals are available at L-Soft(r) web site.
