Strictly Swing Contest at the Mario weekend!

What is a strictly swing?  A strictly swing is a social dance competition.  It is meant to be fun and to show off how well you can lead and follow.  It does not require choreography or costumes.  Couples are judged on the three Ts (Teamwork, Timing, Technique).  Competitors pick their own partners and sign up with that partner.  The contest coordinator supplies the music.  The contest will be held at the Saturday evening dance.

How will SSDS run its Strictly Swing?

1.      You must sign up with a partner.  The fee is $10 per couple.  Registration closes 5:30pm Saturday.

2.      All varieties of swing dance are eligible (lindy, East Coast Swing/Jitterbug, West Coast Swing, even Hustle!)—we will choose music that is appropriate for all.

3.      We will offer two levels of competition:  Amateur and Professional.

4.      You may dance as Amateur if:

a.       you do not teach any form of dance and…

b.      you have been dancing for less than five years and…

c.       you have not placed (1st, 2nd, or 3rd) in any major swing competitions regardless of the level (jack and jill or strictly swing) and…

d.      your partner also meets this criteria.

5.      You must dance as Professional if:

a.       you have taught any form of dance (regardless of whether or not it’s your primary source of income.) or …

b.      you have been dancing for five years or more or…

c.       you have placed in a major swing competition or…

d.      your partner qualifies for Professional.

6.      At least two songs will be played at each level, three if necessary (2 minutes each).  At least one song will be considered “slow” and one song will be considered “fast.”

7.      This will be a finals only competition.  It will be held at about 10:30 pm.  The Amateurs will dance first, then the Professionals will dance.  Winners will be announced at midnight.

8.      Prizes will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.  First place splits the competition fees.  Second and Third places win a Mario video.

9.      If there are less than five couples in either category, that category may be cancelled or combined with the other at the contest coordinator’s discretion.  No more than ten couples will be allowed to compete in each category.

10.  There will be an odd number of judges—at least five. The judges will be local and regional instructors.

11.  Same sex partners are acceptable.

12.  No lifts, drops, or aerials allowed. Slides, leans, and leveraged moves are acceptable as long as both partners have at least one foot on the floor.
