Hi dancers!

If you were not among those who filled the Ukrainian Home during the
Mary Ann Nuņez West Coast Swing weekend you missed some great
workshops and two fun dances with fellow dancers from all over New
York State, Toronto, and even Australia!

The weekend started without Mary Ann, who got stranded in Chicago due
to a canceled flight and didn't get in town until long after
midnight. In spite of a long trip and a longer delay, she was in
great spirits and gave workshops which were enjoyable as well as
instructional.

Steve and Kim filled in Friday night with an excellent complimentary
workshop they put together with a one-hour notice. We owe them a big
thank you for that. In addition, Steve made all the arrangements with
the instructor and the venue, and was in charge of the overall
weekend. Our appreciation goes to the following captains who
coordinated major activities and to all the volunteers who made sure
everything went so smoothly: Kim (registration), Tracie (housing),
Mark (door duty at the dances), Tom (set-up, clean-up), Rosalie
(refreshments). Two guest DJ's, Dancin' David from Rochester and
Michael Wagner from Toronto, took turns playing hot blues and funky
R&B Friday night and during open dances throughout the weekend. The
dances wouldn't have been the same without them. Michael was so
dedicated, we had to literally pull the plug to make him quit on
Sunday. And last, but not least, we thank all the dancers there who
made the weekend such a great success.

Looking forward to the next one.

Syracuse Swing Dance Society

We are happy to announce West Coast Swing workshops with U.S. Open Champion Mary Ann Nuņez during the New York State Rhythm & Blues Festival. Workshops at various levels will be held Friday (1 workshop), Saturday (3 workshops) and Sunday (2 workshops). Private classes are also available; contact Steve 315-434-9503 to schedule one. There will be dancing Friday night to DJ music and Saturday night to live music with Bizznezz, a 7 piece R&B band, very funky, very danceable. Dance events are held on the huge dance floor of the Ukrainian Home, minutes from downtown Syracuse. Smoke free environment, no partner needed. Accommodations are available for out of town dancers. Schedule

We arranged the schedule so that there will be ample time to catch national and local blues acts performing outdoors in Downtown Syracuse, for FREE. They include, on Saturday afternoon Skeeter Brandon & Highway 61, The Derek Trucks Band, Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers, on Sunday afternoon Mississippi's Willie J. Foster, Johnnie Bassett, Little Milton and Bobby 'Blue' Bland. Those who haven't had enough dancing by Sunday night can boogie at the all star jam session at Styleen's from 10pm to 2am; there is a $5 cover charge for that show. There are many venues which feature blues acts during the festival; finding an open slot on the dance floors may be a frustrating experience, though. A detailed festival schedule is available at the R&B Fest site.

Mary Ann Nuņez

Workshop Instructor: Mary Ann Nuņez

In 1983 Miss Nuņez started social dancing West Coast Swing. Six months later she was on a TV special called "In The Swing" by Dean Collins; he became her coach that same year as she began to appreciate big band music. She won first place at the US Open in 1983 and 1984. Miss Nuņez has also won many other awards: two time Dancer Choice Award for favorite female teacher, three time feather award for the most outstanding dancer in the US Open, and first place in more than forty Jack & Jill contests. She enjoys traveling the country teaching swing, as well as teaching at her studio in California. Top

Hi SSDS:)

I am responsible for setting up housing for fellow dancers during the Blues Fest Weekend (July 14-16). If you are able to host a dancer or a few dancers, please let me know. I will be compiling a list with your preferences. We think we will have dancers from all over (Ithaca, Rochester, Buffalo, and Toronto to name a few) coming into town for the Nunez Workshops and the Blues Fest. We will be hosting a dance Friday and Saturday nights in the smoke free, dancer friendly Ukrainian Home. This will probably be the best place to meet up with your guests.

Please provide the following info:

1. How many people can you host?
2. Which nights can you host them?
3. How can I reach you? Please provide phone numbers or e-mail addresses.
4. What rules do you have (such as "no smoking", no people with pet allergies, male/female only, couple only etc.)
5. Anything else you think I should know when making arrangements.

Thanks and See You at the Hop!

Subject: Nunez workshops--registration

Date: Tue, 27 Jun 2000 22:07:59 -0400
From: Kim McLaughlin
To: SSDS@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU

Hi all,

I'm coordinating the registration desk for the Mary Ann Nunez workshops. To that end I'll need some volunteers. Anyone who volunteers for registration will get $10 off the all-in price of $60 (you must be pre-registered for the all-in package to qualify for the discount). I will need volunteers for the following times:

Friday
7:00 to 7:30
7:30 to 8:00
Saturday
10:15 to 11
11:45 to 12:15
6:30 to 7
Sunday
10:30 to 11
11:45 to 12:15

Please respond by email by putting your name next to the time you can volunteer along with an email address or telephone number in case I need to reach you. Two volunteers for each time slot is the optimal. If you decide to volunteer, please show up 15 minutes before your time begins. You will not need to miss any of the workshops if you volunteer.

Thanks,

Kim

Hi, Fellow Dancers!

This is a very late and DESPERATE plea for door volunteers for the SSDS weekend with Marianne Nunez. Specifically, we're in need for Friday July 14 from 8:30 to 11:00 for the DJ dance and Saturday July 15 from 7:30 to 12:00 for the band dance. All are 1/2 hour slots. The perks for doing this are unbelievable. Not only do you get to bask in the glory of saying that you were an SSDS volunteer, but you also get to dance at these functions (better sit down) for FREE! Once the chills have stopped travelling up and down your spine, you can write me back about what slot you would like. Or you can call me at work at 474-8230 or leave a message at home at 687-6262.

Thanks for your support.
