1. Old Business
General Report - Tania welcomed ideas for using the publicity photos. Collaborative event with Ithaca -- tabled. Progress on purchases: SSDS purchased new phone line/number for $226.39, answering machine for $64.18. New phone number for SSDS is 434-9043. With previous administrative grant purchase of approximately $100 for mailer software, that leaves approximately $600 to purchase combination fax, printer, copier, scanner machine. We authorized Steve to purchase the new equipment. Tania will purchase PO box at post office in federal building, downtown Syracuse, for $44 annual fee. Once we have new address, Tania will order new business cards. Greg will look into buying a return address stamp vs. return address labels for our mailers. So far in 2000 we have mailed 1,090 pieces. Can purchased new banner to replace one stolen in July.
Financial Report - October showed a net loss of $406.44, but that included above purchases that are covered by grant funds. Hop revenue for month was $225, water revenue $60.50. Net income for dance on Nov. 13 was $88. Net revenue for Halloween workshops and dance (Oct. 26 & 27) was $39.42. Halloween events' total revenue was $1,384 and total expenses were $1,344.
WCS and Lindy Hop nights - Greg reported that many Lindy Hop dancers have been attending monthly dances by Syracuse Jazz Appreciation Society at Mattydale VFW and will continue to piggyback on this event instead of pursuing a formal SSDS Lindy Hop night at this time. Can has not been able to find a suitable location for monthly WCS nights. Steve has been negotiating with management of Caribou Club for lessons and dancing on Tuesday or Sunday nights. If Steve and Kim decide to teach lessons Sundays at Caribou, then SSDS will piggyback by attending open dancing after the lessons. Band on Sundays at Caribou begins at 9:30.
Grants - Tania submitted grant to Cultural Resources Council on October 11, 2000. Tania will submit request for funding to Senator DeFrancisco's office.
Halloween dance - Positive review of event. Rosalie did a super job with the food; band (Joe Whiting) was excellent. Decorating the hall on the Thursday night prior to the dance (by moving our hop to Ukrainian Home) worked well and will be repeated next year. No one missed the costume contest, but several people did miss the parade of costumes. Kim noted that we need to have a master of ceremonies to make announcements because people don't look at the flyers on display.
Demos - Final WCS demos of Steve & Kim's current choreography is Nov. 18 at Nardone weekend. After a general discussion prompted by email suggestions that Maria Cirino sent prior to the meeting, we decided to make an effort to include all local instructors and demo teams for performance opportunities. If someone calls SSDS requesting a demo, we want to make sure that any group with a current routine is included. Can will write language on the SSDS web page inviting area teachers to use SSDS events for performances/demos and that we will facilitate publicity for their demo teams. We also decided to maintain the status quo and not have SSDS pay instructors for choreography classes. The classes remain separate from SSDS.
Video library - Proposal to purchase dance instruction videos for lending to SSDS members. Can withdrew his proposal due to his own time constraints. If someone else wants to manage this project, we will reconsider it.
Dance event table registration policy - Proposal to have SSDS front money to reserve tables at regional dance events and then collect reimbursement from attendees. Tabled until Tracie can present proposal.
Fundraiser at Manlius Pebble Hill - Can said the silent auction and demo on Nov. 4 were successful. The band at the event (MPH jazz band) would be an excellent choice for future Lindy Hop dance. Can will determine band's availability and then contact Lindy Hop dancers for follow-up.
2. New Business
Diane Nardone workshops -- Dates November 17, 18, 19. Band Letitia is booked for $800. Nardone is paid $125 per workshop hour. Venue for Friday and Sunday is Ukrainian Home (cost $150). Venue for lessons and band dance Saturday night is Knights of Columbus (cost $400). Steve will bring publicity flyers to Country Club on Friday the 10th. Mark will coordinate door duty and registration volunteers. Tania will coordinate clean-up, food, hospitality. Steve will put a voice mailbox on SSDS number dedicated to housing needs. Can and Steve will handle set-up. Volunteers receive one free workshop (value $8 pre-registered or $10 at door). Steve will contact Genesee Inn about Nardone's lodging. Demo by current choreography class, Steve will set up other demos to showcase Nardone. Steve will get instructors for beginning workshops, and SSDS will pay the instructors $50 per hour.
Other workshops - Maria scheduled Mario Robau for 2002. Steve is negotiating with Sarah and Kyle of California for WCS workshops in 2001. Their available dates are June 1-3 & 8-10, September 7-9. We will check for scheduling conflicts.
Holiday party - Date is Thursday, December 21 at Damon's. Cost is $5 or dish to pass. When we get closer to time of event, we will solicit volunteers for food purchases, publicity.
New Year's Eve dance - Can has meeting scheduled with OnTrack management for renting station. He will talk to Otis Jennings about other possible venues.
Other Business - Can proposed buying new sound equipment that is more reliable, easier to use and lighter (for transport), cost not to exceed of $2,000. We would keep the old equipment as a back-up. Can will research issue and report at next meeting.
