Minutes of SSDS Meeting June 29, 2003

- Old Business
- General Report
- Weekly dance status report. Dave reported that he has 39 volunteers for door duty and needs two more to start the permanent rotation assignments. He said lately he has been getting volunteers without much trouble. Can will ask Greg to bring in the two SSDS box fans; apparently one other fan is missing. Tania will post picnic flyers at the Ballybay door on 7/3. Dave said there was nothing new about possible spotlight lessons of new dances taught by Maria.
- Purchase of storage cabinet (Greg). Carried over.
- Marketing, including status of mailer and shirt inventory. Tania reported that we put out a mailer on 6/22 to about 671 names on the mailing list at a total cost of $547 ($259 for stamps and $288.50 for copies and folding). Tania will inventory the shirts and report on new shirt designs or orders at next meeting.
- Teaching slots available Thursdays 7/3 and 8/7. Mary Ellen will teach a class 7/3 from 7 to 8 to prepare people for the jack and jill during Mario weekend. The class will be free to those who signed up for contest, $5 per student otherwise, and SSDS will pay the Ballybay rent. Mary Ellen will publicize the class. Slot on 8/7 still open.
- Consent agenda
- Donation of $100 to Swing DJ Hall of Fame Award. This award recognized swing DJs who have worked on swing dance events for several years and compiled dance CDs. The award was presented in Atlanta at the swing dance championships. SSDS for its donation received recognition, national exposure at the award presentation and on the web page.
- Financial Report – Greg sent a partial report based on available information. Net loss for the month was $301, mostly due to the mailer expense.
- Committee Reports – No reports.
- Progress on upcoming events.
- Mario Robau workshop July 11-13. Dave is still looking for volunteers to staff workshops and dances. Mary Ellen is handling preparation of hall on 7/11, buying water, organizing contests and snacks, getting dance DJs. Mary Ellen needs help moving the tables at noon on 7/11.
- Nardone Hustle workshops November 21-23. We need to reserve a hall. Can will follow up on his prior emails.
- Halloween Dance October 25. Can reported that we have a band, John Cole Blues Band, and hall, Knights of Columbus on State Fair Blvd. Admission will be $8 and we would break even with 100 people. Can said Rochester and Ithaca dances organizers agreed not to hire John Cole for their events around the time of 10/25.
- Hanover Square. Tania. Hanover Square. Can volunteered to teach on 8/1, and Tania will teach on 8/8.
- Summer picnic July 10. Tania reported that she and Ann will do the shopping on 7/1 at 7:30 at Maines. They will handle set-up with help from Sally. Mary Ellen will pick up the sound system on 7/3 and get it to the picnic site. Kim is doing the ice breaker game and a 5- to 7-minute skit.
- New Business
- Holiday Dance. Date will be 12/18. We will check Kof C on Taft Road and the Polish Home for availability and price.
- New Years Eve dance. Can emailed Andy and Ilona, who are interested in doing a joint dance again and will check with the USABDA board. They also will check on availability of Ballybay.
Next Business Meeting: Sunday August 3 at 7 p.m. at Mike and Alice's house.
